Vivekananda Tribal Health Centre (VTHC)

VTHC is a hospital supported by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India. The hospital is located within the VGKK campus that provides free health services for local tribal communities and others in Chamarajanagar. This hospital grew to 20-beds, however now following the COVID-19 pandemic, it is scaled down to 10-beds to ensure compliance to COVID-19 guidelines and to improve the quality of services provided.

The hospital provides the following services:

  1. Outpatient services for routine medical conditions including non-communicable diseases. Minor illness, chronic disease, triage & referrals, OPD antenatal & postnatal service, sickle cell anaemia, mental health service; OPD minor procedures & dressing.
  2. Inpatient services including day care service and observation.
  3. Emergency services provide first-aid and stabilising patients prior to referral in cases of accidents and injuries, animal bites/attacks, etc.    
  4. Minor day care procedures such as ear syringing, suturing of injuries etc in a minor operation theatre.
  5. Well-equipped labour room with 24/7 safe normal delivery services by trained nurse and medical officer.
  6. Laboratory to conduct basic blood, urine tests and screening for sickle cell disease. VTHC received a tele-ECG unit through Karuna Trust, Biochemistry analyser and haematocele counter received from Right to Live (WIPFLI – implementation partner) organisation.
  7. X ray service available.
  8. Pharmacy with generic medicines including mental health and emergency drugs.
  9. Sickle cell disease screening and diagnosis by haemoglobin electrophoresis and management, along with counselling of family about the condition
  10. 24/7 Ambulance Services provide pick up and drop bed-ridden or serious cases to VTHC, patients follow ups and emergency referrals including pregnancy or labour complications to nearby first referral unit, district hospital Chamarajanagar and in some cases, KR hospital Mysore.
  11. School Health Check-Up: VTHC routinely conducts school health check-ups, and conducted covid screening tests (including government schools) along with sub centre health teams in the past year.
  12. Internship training programme: Medical students from Chamarajanagar Institute of Medical Science, Chamarajanagar, (CIMS) are posted for their Community Medicine postings for 15-30 days. Each batch is divided into multi groups ad are posted at the nearby Primary Healthcare Centre in Gumballi, OPD and the Mobile Health Unit.

MOBILE HEALTH UNIT (MHU)

The MHU provides health services to remote and interior tribal settlements in BR Hills to various settlements in Male Mahadeshwara (MM) Hills, which includes settlements in Chamarajanagar, Yelandur, Kollegal and Hanur taluks. Every month, the MHU team consisting of  one medical officer, health assistants and/or a nurse and driver from VTHC ensure access to healthcare for neglected tribal hamlets . They provide treatment for minor illnesses, screening for various non-communicable diseases, antenatal and postnatal services. They also screen for any high-risk or serious cases and refer them to VTHC or the nearby government PHC for appropriate evaluation and management. In 2021-22, the MHU covered a total of 55 hamlets with a  total beneficiaries of 2,482 individuals.
